Can World War III Be Avoided? --- Impact Of The "VUCA" Syndrome & The Urgent Imperative of Business Leadership A recently released report from the UNHCR (United Nations High Commission for Refugees) states that “the number of people displaced by war, conflict or persecution reached a record high of nearly 60 million around the world in 2014”. The number forced to flee their homes in 2014 rose to 8.3 million, slightly more than the entire population of Switzerland. Those displaced per day stood at 42,500 – some 10,000 more than the previous year. As refugees pour in from Syria, Eritrea and other parts of the Middle East and Africa across the Mediterranean, European leaders run about like a flock of headless chickens; while in Southeast Asia and Australia leaders assume (to mix avian metaphors) the ostrich position in the face of their refugee crises – notably in the case of Nobel Peace Laureate Aung San Suu-Kyi and the Rohingyas who face ethnic persecution and possible genocide.
