Why The USWNT Is 'Over' The Turf, Gender Discrimination In Sports
Why The USWNT Is 'Over' The Turf, Gender Discrimination In Sports Carli Lloyd, the midfielder who made World Cup history by scoring the fastest hat trick in tournament history, is "over" playing on turf. We are right there with you, Carli. We are over it too. In the months preceding the 2015 World Cup, members of the USWNT along with notable international players called for FIFA to reverse its decision of allowing the premier women’s soccer tournament to be played on turf. Making it FIFA’s first senior event played on turf - by men or women. Not surprisingly, their request to FIFA was denied. The players (Wambach et al.) turned to the Canadian legal system – Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario – and filed a gender discrimination lawsuit against the Canadian Soccer Association. Ultimately, they took the high road and withdrew their lawsuit.
