How 11-Year-Old Football Star Sam Gordon Saved Super Bowl Sunday True confession: I watched very little professional football this season. I followed the NFL just enough to keep my fantasy team competitive and support my hometown - Detroit Lions - franchise. Beyond that, I rarely tuned in. The NFL’s off the field issues were just too much to bear. The league’s disappointing response to its domestic violence crisis was disheartening and at times seemed disingenuous. While the NFL pledged to instill a culture change, which included airing anti-domestic violence public service announcements, consulting with anti-violence experts, updating its personal conduct policy with stricter penalties, and adding women to its leadership ranks – watching professional football was still a struggle. Not to mention Commissioner Roger Goodell’s perhaps lack of humility during his State of the NFL address. Plus, the recent controversy surrounding the league’s internal investigation procedures, Deflategate, and Marshawn “Beast Mode” Lynch – I was ready to skip Super Bowl XLIX.
