Why Are So Many Women Being Killed On The Outskirts Of Mexico City?
Why Are So Many Women Being Killed On The Outskirts Of Mexico City? On a recent Sunday morning I watched a group of young women gather in front of Mexico City's stately Palacio de Bellas Artes. “Not one more. Not one more murder!” the activists shouted. Their voices were almost lost in the thrum of the weekend traffic passing through Mexico's centro historico, but the women were trying to draw attention to the crisis of violence against women that is taking place in the bleak grey dormitory communities in the urban fringes of the city. Technically part of the state of Estado de Mexico and not part of the capital, or Distrito Federal as Mexico City is called by residents, the urban periphery is populated by millions of lower middle class families who moved from Mexico's rural communities to try to look for work in the city.
