Where Is the Gender Pay Gap As High As America's? America’s gender pay gap, commonly given as 22%, is among the highest in the industrialized world, aside from Korea and Japan. I had assumed it was lower in European countries, which have better child care infrastructures and more liberal maternity leave policies. Also with German Chancellor Angela Merkel sitting at No. 5 on Forbes’ Power Women list I was surprised to read that the gender pay gap in Germany, at 22%, is as high as the gap in the U.S. and not likely to go down soon. It’s also among the highest in Europe, with a 2014 European Union report showing that only Estonia (30%) and Austria (23.4%) have higher gaps out of the 28 EU countries.
